Turkish appeal and Israel's role
Turkey’s ambassador to Syria, Nuh Yilmaz, called on NATO member states to use their leverage to press Israel to change policies that Ankara says are exacerbating instability in Syria. Yilmaz told Anadolu in Ankara that Israeli actions — including what he described as occupation of Syrian territory, harassment of communities and policies driving depopulation and displacement — are deepening crises, deterring investors and undermining political legitimacy. He said Türkiye seeks greater Western support to stabilise Syria for both security reasons and to curb irregular migration.
Economic and strategic stakes, and NATO’s future
Yilmaz urged steps to help Syria’s economic recovery, including removing Syria from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism — a move he said Washington may consider by the end of the summer — which he argued would have a positive impact. He also touched on broader alliance issues, noting tensions raised by President Trump and European talk of an alternative army, and said the upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye should address the alliance’s future role, shifting threats and the need to anticipate rather than merely react to crises. as reported by Anadolu Agency
