US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack will relinquish the formal envoy title after his mandate expired, but will continue to direct Washington’s policy on Syria and Iraq while still serving as ambassador to Turkiye, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced. Barrack, a billionaire investor who has held the Syria portfolio since May 2025, will keep coordinating ties with regional partners and overseeing operations without a named successor, a move Rubio framed as preserving continuity.
During his year in the post Barrack pushed a US pivot toward the interim Damascus administration of Ahmed al-Sharaa, advocated easing economic sanctions on Syria, and helped coordinate counter-Islamic State efforts with Turkey and Gulf states while raising funds from Emirati sovereign sources. His tenure drew scrutiny: Kurdish leaders accused Washington of sidelining longtime partners after a deal with Damascus, critics highlighted past legal and diplomatic controversies, and analysts say the title lapse mainly signals a preference for continuity rather than a policy reset. as reported by Al Jazeera
