Syrian authorities say they intercepted a truck carrying advanced weapons and rockets at the border with Iraq, seizing the shipment after a preliminary Interior Ministry investigation concluded it was destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon. State-run SANA reported the seizure as part of a broader crackdown by Syria's post-2024 leadership — which toppled Bashar al-Assad — on arms and drug smuggling along the Iraqi and Lebanese frontiers. The alleged consignment comes amid Hezbollah's clashes with Israel since early March.
Hezbollah dismissed the accusation as "baseless," reiterating past denials of operations inside Syria. Iraq's Joint Operations command announced formation of a committee to probe the smuggling and said it will coordinate with Damascus. The incident unfolds against U.S. pressure on Syria, including calls by President Donald Trump for action against Hezbollah, while Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa seeks to avoid entanglement in a wider regional conflict; Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi recently traveled to Washington to meet with Trump, who has urged Baghdad to disarm Iran-backed militias, underscoring regional tensions. as reported by AP News
