President Ahmad al-Sharaa attended the launch in Damascus of a nationwide National Campaign to Combat Drugs and Treat Addiction, organized by the Ministries of Interior and Health on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Interior Minister Anas Khattab announced the campaign as a reaffirmation of the state's commitment to protect society, strengthen prevention and raise awareness. Khattab framed the drug threat as a shared national and international challenge, accused the ousted regime of turning Syria into a major source of Captagon and other illicit drugs, and said recent operations have dismantled trafficking networks, uncovered production sites and seized tons of precursor chemicals.
Health Minister Musab al-Ali said the ministry is taking an institutional approach and coordinating with national partners, the WHO and the UNODC to expand prevention, treatment and response capacity. Khattab stressed that security measures must be combined with education, awareness and healthcare to build a comprehensive national framework. During the ceremony al-Sharaa and Khattab also honored the family of a DEA agent killed while on duty. as reported by SANA
