German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann, who vanished in northeastern Syria during a government offensive in January, was released and returned to Germany on Friday, her lawyer Roland Meister confirmed. Michelmann went missing alongside Turkish-Kurdish colleague Ahmed Polad while reporting on the conflict's aftermath; both had worked for Istanbul-based Etkin News Agency (ETHA) and Ozgur TV. For months their whereabouts were uncertain until the lawyer's public confirmation of her return.
It remains unclear why Michelmann was detained or whether any charges were filed; German authorities had said last week they were working at a high level to secure her release. Her return comes amid political shifts in Damascus under a new government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose pledge of inclusivity has done little to allay concerns among Kurds and other minorities about the direction of the country after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, as reported by Deutsche Welle
