Douma National Hospital reopens after WHO-Japan rehabilitation to serve 550,000

Douma National Hospital Reopens

Health Minister Musab al-Ali inaugurated the rehabilitated Douma National Hospital in Damascus countryside following refurbishment and equipment support from the World Health Organization funded by the Government of Japan. The facility is expected to provide healthcare to around 550,000 people in Douma and surrounding areas. The hospital comprises two buildings with a total capacity of 40 beds, including eight intensive care beds and eight neonatal incubators; one building houses women’s and children’s services, maternity, a neonatal ICU, laboratories and radiology, while the other contains the emergency department, operating theatres, an ICU, outpatient clinics and diagnostic imaging such as X-ray and ultrasound.

Al-Ali described the reopening as a key step in strengthening Syria’s healthcare system and expanding access to comprehensive medical services, thanked the Japanese government for its support, and said the Ministry of Health will continue upgrading infrastructure and supplying needed personnel and equipment. The ceremony was attended by Damascus Countryside Governor Amer al-Sheikh, Japanese Assistant Foreign Minister Keiichi Iwamoto, Japanese Chargé d’Affaires Akihiro Tsuji, and WHO Representative in Syria Dr. Caroline Clarinval, as reported by SANA
