Mezzeh 86 demonstration, June 16

On June 16 residents staged a demonstration at the entrance to the Mezzeh 86 neighborhood in Damascus that began near the area and concentrated at a main gate. Protesters called for the removal of those they described as “shabiha and remnants of the former regime,” demanded accountability for alleged violations and sought to prevent such figures from remaining in or returning to the area. Tensions rose as some participants used sectarian phrases — a sensitive development given the neighborhood’s mixed composition with a larger Alawite presence — prompting Public Security forces to intervene, disperse the gathering, block entrances and order shops to close. The situation remained tense for several hours but had calmed by morning with no further security incidents reported.

Wider context

Local witnesses and reporting link the Mezzeh 86 mobilization to a wave of similar actions across Syria — from Aleppo and Idlib to rural Damascus, Raqqa and Deir Ezzor — demanding transitional justice, the removal or isolation of former-regime figures from communities and state institutions, and measures to prevent their political rehabilitation. Demonstrators have also called for greater transparency in anti-corruption files and an end to favoritism, reviving debate over how accountability should be pursued outside formal judicial mechanisms. as reported by Enab Baladi
