Visit and controversy

Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was welcomed to central Berlin with meetings at the chancellery and with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier amid tight security. The reception drew criticism because al-Sharaa — who previously led the al-Nusra Front, once allied with al‑Qaeda — faces accusations of serious human rights violations. German tabloids reported he stayed in a five‑star hotel and was greeted by supporters chanting; government spokespeople nonetheless stress that the interim leader is the primary interlocutor for Syria and necessary for talks on returning refugees and reconstruction.

Repatriation push and divided reaction

Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a joint task force and a German delegation to visit Syria, and said he wants 80% of Syrians in Germany to return within three years. The comment comes as roughly 1 million Syrians live in Germany (about 700,000 considered asylum seekers) and has intensified debate: Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt backs return plans, while Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and many NGOs warn that conditions in Syria remain undignified and that forced deportations would be inappropriate. NGOs called for German engagement in reconstruction and protections for minorities, and warned that voluntary returns could risk individuals losing protected status in Germany. as reported by Deutsche Welle
